Short-term vs monthly instalment loans in South Africa

Short-term vs monthly instalment loans in South Africa

A short-term loan and a monthly-instalment loan solve different timing problems. The loan amount alone cannot show which is affordable. Consider when the money must be returned, how many payments are due and the total repayment after interest and fees.

A confirmed day-based example

CreditBar's FAQ gives a 7–61 day term and a maximum of R5,000; its main site starts at R500. This can put a substantial payment close to the borrowing date. Check the exact date in the individual quotation, especially if your income could arrive later than expected.

A published monthly-instalment example

FASTA publishes credit up to R15,000 with up to six equal monthly instalments. Its calculator displays costs for the chosen amount and schedule. A smaller payment each month can be easier to plan, but compare the sum of all payments and the fees included in them.

Make a fair comparison

Choose the amount you actually need and request a current quotation for each suitable product. Write the amount paid out, total repayable and all due dates side by side. Do not treat a published maximum as a guaranteed offer. If a site does not publish a confirmed term, ask it directly rather than assuming it fits either category.

Where to go next

The short-term category contains the provider with a confirmed day-based range. The personal-loan category covers all five current routes, including providers whose individual terms require an assessment. Read the total-cost guide before signing.
