Short answer: Personal loan requirements vary by lender. Expect questions about identity, contact details, income, existing obligations and the loan you want. Supporting documents may include identification, income evidence and address verification. A complete application helps the lender review your case; it does not guarantee approval.
Read the specific provider’s eligibility page. Check where it lends, which applicants it accepts, whether you need an existing customer relationship and whether it accepts your income type. There is no single US minimum income or credit score for every personal loan.
For example, Wells Fargo’s checklist says its personal loans are for existing customers with a qualifying consumer product open for at least 12 months. That is its rule, not an industry standard. Checking restrictions first can prevent an application to a provider that cannot serve you.
Use this preparation list, then follow the lender’s instructions. Not every item is requested for every applicant. Some information may be verified electronically.
| Area | Have ready | Possible evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and contact | Name, birth date, address, phone, email and accepted identification number | Government identification; address evidence if requested |
| Income and employment | Income sources, amount, frequency; employment or business details | Pay statements, tax documents or bank statements as requested |
| Obligations | Monthly debt payments, housing payment and balances being refinanced | Statements or payoff information for consolidated accounts |
| Loan requested | Purpose, amount, preferred term and affordable payment | Expense estimate or creditor information where relevant |
Wells Fargo lists pay stubs, W-2s or tax returns and address or identity documents among items it may request after review. Discover’s FAQs describe pay stubs or bank statements as possible income evidence and note third-party verification may be used. These examples show why a lender-specific list matters.
Ask which evidence the lender accepts before sending unrelated records. Find out which period it needs, whether it uses business or personal income, and how it treats fluctuations. Business revenue is not automatically money available for personal payments after business expenses and taxes.
Prepare an explanation of your reported figures: income source, period covered and supporting document. Identify several income streams separately. Ask about other income you want considered rather than assuming only a salary counts. Do not alter a statement or omit an obligation to make an application look stronger.
The CFPB defines debt-to-income ratio (DTI) as monthly debt payments divided by gross monthly income. Limits vary by lender and product. DTI is a planning check; it does not replace the lender’s calculation or your household budget.
Worked example: $1,050 in monthly debt payments divided by $4,200 gross monthly income equals 25%. If a proposed loan adds $210 without replacing existing debt, the illustration becomes $1,260 ÷ $4,200 = 30%. This is arithmetic, not a claim that 30% qualifies.
Now test cash flow. Suppose take-home pay is $3,300, essentials cost $1,800, existing debt payments are $1,050, and you reserve $250 for irregular expenses. That leaves $200. A $210 new payment exceeds that allowance even though the illustrative DTI is 30%. List costs once to avoid double-counting housing or other items. Use lender rules for DTI and real take-home money for affordability.
No. Basic eligibility lets you be considered; underwriting can still result in a decline or different terms. Prequalification is conditional too.
Possibly, if the provider accepts another form of verification. Ask what it accepts for your circumstances. “No pay stub” does not establish “no income verification.”
Check the product. An unsecured loan does not require pledged collateral; a secured loan does. The label “personal loan” alone does not establish the security requirements.
Ask what is missing and whether it concerns identity, income or loan use. A document request is part of a review, not proof of approval or rejection.
