Personal loan prequalification: soft checks and offer comparison

Personal loan prequalification: soft checks and offer comparison

Short answer: Personal loan prequalification is an initial eligibility check that may show estimated rates, amounts and repayment terms. It often uses a soft credit inquiry, which does not affect your credit scores. Confirm the provider’s process before submitting: a full application can involve a hard inquiry, and a preliminary result does not guarantee approval.

What prequalification tells you

A preview helps you compare options before committing to a full application. It is a starting point for a decision, not cash available to spend. The lender may need to verify identity, income and other information before deciding whether to lend. The final amount, APR or term may differ from the estimate.

Keep a copy of the result and note when you received it. If the screen gives a range, record the range rather than assuming you qualify for its lowest rate. If the page only says you have been matched with a provider, you may not have a personalized lender quote at all.

Soft versus hard credit checks

The CFPB distinguishes soft and hard inquiries: soft inquiries do not affect scores; hard inquiries associated with applying for credit can affect them. A request for personal information alone does not identify which inquiry will occur. Read the authorization, especially if a button moves you from checking rates to applying.

Discover explains its prequalification process as an initial soft pull, with a hard inquiry typically following a full application. That is a provider example, not a promise about every site. Do not assume several personal loan applications will be treated as one inquiry.

A five-step checklist before submitting

  1. Set a borrowing target. Write down the cash you actually need and the payment your budget can absorb after essentials and existing debts. A larger suggested amount is not a reason to borrow more.
  2. Identify the service. Is it the lender or a site passing details to partners? Read our matching service versus direct lender guide. A match and an underwriting decision are different events.
  3. Read the authorization. Check the inquiry type, who can contact you and when you move to a full application. Ask the provider before proceeding if the explanation is unclear.
  4. Report accurately. Keep the amount, income period and term consistent across previews. Do not inflate income to obtain a better result.
  5. Compare like with like. Save quotes for the same amount and term, then check fees and net funds. Pause if none fits your repayment budget.

Your comparison worksheet

Copy these fields for each preview: provider and actual lender; requested amount; cash received after any deducted fee; fixed or variable rate; APR; term; monthly payment; total scheduled repayment; early-payment rules; and conditions still to be met. Mark unavailable fields “not provided.” A missing fee disclosure cannot safely be treated as zero.

For example, two hypothetical previews both advertise a $5,000 loan. Preview A deducts a $250 fee and sends $4,750. Preview B sends $5,000 without that deduction. The headline amounts match, but usable cash differs. You still need APR, payments and term to compare full cost. Our origination fee guide explains the calculation.

If you cannot prequalify

Review your information and the provider’s eligibility rules before applying repeatedly. Check for credit-report errors, reconsider the amount and review monthly obligations. Ask whether a missing or unverifiable detail caused the result. Do not pay someone promising to turn a preliminary rejection into guaranteed approval.

Common questions

Does prequalification guarantee the advertised APR?

No. Treat it as conditional until final terms follow the lender’s review. Check expiry dates and assumptions you may not meet.

Are preapproval and prequalification always different?

Labels vary. Ask what has been verified and which inquiry occurs. A heading saying “preapproved” does not prove a final commitment.

Can I compare without a hard inquiry?

A provider expressly offering a soft-inquiry preview may allow this at that stage. Check each process and stop before a full application unless you intend to proceed.
